What some makers call netbooks, others call laptops or ultra-light or ultra-portable PCs. There’s no universally concluded definition re size, weight, screen size or battery life. The best you are able to say is that there are some transportable PCs that are thinner, lighter and have longer battery lives than others, and these are often referred to as netbooks.

Netbook vs Laptop

Netbooks are made for basic jobs and basic net browsing and e-mail. They usually come with little processing power ( up to 1.3GHz ), Windows XP or Linux ( Ubuntu ) operating system, and only 80GB of storage. Some would say that anything with a screen more than fifteen inches and over isn’t a netbook, but it appears simpler to consider whether your transportable PC has an internal DVD drive. If it doesn’t, then it is either a netbook or awfully old indeed. So what are the main advantages of a netbook vs laptop?

The most easy is they are smaller and lighter. They are less back-breaking to tote around and fit more tidily on your lap on an overcrowded train. The shortage of a DVD drive, and the marginally smaller screen, mean the battery will run for longer.

Some notebooks are also moving from standard hard drives to flash memory, that leads to even better battery performance. Re functionality, it may still do everything a computer can do.

Except you may not be able to play your pictures on DVD, but if you have them as a download or AVI file, then you’re fine.

And they’ll have built-in wi-fi and Bluetooth, so mobile browsing and all that offers, is straightforward. There are disadvantages, however. Maybe the largest complaint is the dimensions of the keyboards. If you have large fingers, you’ll find that you spend as much time correcting typos as you do typing.

Also, any software which comes on a disc will have to be installed at home, where you’ll need to glue a plug and play from an external DVD drive. And , you had better be adept at encoding video from other sources if you need to look at films or Television shows moving. Some would also disagree a netbook isn’t actually capable of standing in for your desktop Computer if it dies. It all depends how you use your desktop PC.

Netbooks currently are not provided for processor-intensive jobs concerning graphics, footage, and video modifying. But this is beginning to modify as they get stronger. The other potential issue in these straitened times, is cost. You’re going to be paying more money for a tiny machine that has barely less functionality than a machine – only marginally bigger. Fundamentally you are paying a premium for simplicity. In a nutshell, the critical things to take into consideration when wanting to buy a netbook are :

• Battery performance.
• Screen size. Keyboard usability.
• Normal drive vs SSD ( flash ) memory – SSD is dearer but more reliable, quicker and lighter.
• Connectivity – what are you able to plug into it?
• Cost.

If you find something tiny, thin, with no DVD drive and a good long battery life, but the price sticker next to it is saying computer, don’t fret about it too much.
