Before netbooks became all of the rage, an ultraportable was the sole choice if you wanted a compact, lightweight laptop companion. With the Fujitsu LifeBook P8020, we’re pleased to see corporations still advancing the latter class.

The business-oriented P8020 squeezes a built-in optical drive, a full crew of ports, and decent ( for the class ) performance into a 2.9-pound machine.

Sure, at $2,500 with the solid-state drive ( SSD )  it costs a ton more than a netbook. But unlike a netbook, when paired with a port replicator and an external screen and monitor, the P8020 can serve as your first work Computer . Fujitsu has been giving more attention to design in its latest generation of notebooks, and that shows in the P8020.

The basic black bony framework sports a glossy lid with metallic flakes that ups the style quotient satisfactory. The 12.1-inch LED-backlit screen on the P8020 is crisp and bright, and the 1,280×800 resolution makes for pointy text. And we are pleased to see that Fujitsu included full-size Enter, Shift, and Backspace keys to make touch-typing less complicated.

The touch pad is a decent size for an ultraportable, and it is one of the new gesture-enabled pads that supports zooming, revolving pictures, and more with the flick of your fingers.

If you can live without the SSD, select the 160GB drive with an accelerometer and save around $450.
