Even before the Sony PlayStation 3 Slim 120GB came knocked out in Sep 2009, there were rumors that a 250GB beast got on the horizon. In spite of the low-key launch, what we have here is the best PlayStation 3 system you are able to purchase.

The first thing to note about the PS3 Slim is without doubt the design. It has split opinions in the office as yet, and though this reviewer thinks the design is an abomination, others think it’s actually nicer than the original. The differences are: the design is very similar, but one third smaller. So it really looks like something of a smaller brother to the original PS3.
Rather than a nice glossy finish, what we have here is a dull matte, flimsy plastic casing that neither feels classy nor sturdy.

Gone, too, is the sexy chrome trimming, with the silver ‘PlayStation 3′ writing being substituted by a lacklustre ‘PS3′ logo embossed on the top of the case.

The on/off and disc-eject touch-sensitive buttons are also conspicuous by their absence, and they have been replaced by real buttons that give way when you push them.

Once you get over the new-look design, and in spite of the slimmer, more power-efficient innards, the PS3 is still basically the same beast. Once you have turned it on, the differences end. The interface is the same. The controller is the same – though you do get a DualShock 3 controller rather than a standard SIXAXIS – and the user experience is the same.

We did some very basic real-world benching and found out that the PS3 Slim does really boot a couple of seconds slower than our original 60GB PS3, though in practise that makes zero difference. The time it takes to load games and play DVDs are precisely the same.

First of all, while the Kindle can not be a totally new class of device (electronic-book readers have been around for a couple of years), it joins the Sony Reader in making the e-book reader class a whole lot sexier and buzzworthy. While the Sony PRS-505 ($300) is the glossier of the two devices, the Kindle is the more revolutionary in that it’s a free built-in wireless connection that lets you to tap into Amazon’s huge online bookstore from almost anywhere you are able to access Sprint’s EVDO cellular data network.

In numerous ways, the Kindle is similar to the Sony Reader. HP’s Mini 311 adds a larger, high-definition display and advanced graphics to a basic Netbook, while keeping the price very appealing.

The Netbook wars have heated, with personal computer manufacturers adding up upscale features such as bigger HD displays and faster low-voltage central processing units in an effort for drive prices up past the usual $299-$399 range.

We have seen HD Netbooks from Sony and others, generally with prices closer to $599, so we are excited to see HP’s fresh Mini 311 packing in an 11.6-inch, 1,366×768 screen, as well as Nvidia’s Ion graphics chip, all beginning at $399. You are still stuck to the same Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP, but that’s typical for a $399 Netbook.

The actual reward is in the Nvidia Ion, which, while not a real discrete GPU, provides enough power to play HD video files smoothly, as well as do some basic gaming. For nongraphics tasks, it will not impact performance much, but it does clear some of the frustrations related with Netbooks, without driving up the price.

The HP Mini 311 includes a standard set of associations for a $399 Netbook (entry-level models under $300 perhaps tempted to drop one of the USB ports or HDMI output). Still, extras such as 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will cost extra. While not as customizable as Dell’s Netbook line (inquisitively also named “Mini”), there are options for the CPU, networking, and mobile broadband.

At tasks which are not graphics-intensive, the Intel Atom N280 CPU performed as expected, roughly matching other Netbooks. As always, we consider Atom-powered systems to be fine for basic tasks such as Web surfing, e-mail, and office tasks, and even introductory Photoshop work–as long as your anticipations are kept realistic.

Putting the Nvidia Ion to the test, we did the unthinkable, loading up a handful of full-fledged PC games on a Netbook. Most Netbooks can hardly handle casual games such as Plants vs. Zombies, to tell nothing of full 3D graphics. Despite the hype, this is decidedly not going to be your main PC gaming rig, but Unreal Tournament still managed to get 23.2 frames per second at 800×600, which is borderline acceptable. Tweaking the settings could likely squeeze a little more out of that game. We also installed Call of Duty 4, and during a particularly intensive firefight sequence, we ran into some stuttering at the same 800×600 resolution, but overall found it to be fairly playable (although your definition of playable may vary).

The major rejoice for Netbooks is still to be useful all-around devices, and as the Nvidia Ion shares much of its DNA with the GeForce 9400 graphics found in the 13-inch MacBook (which is excellent for an integrated graphics solution), the real bottleneck to achieving this goal is the 1GB of RAM and the single-core Atom CPU. We would be very interested in seeing how the same gaming tests run under Windows 7 with double the RAM.

We also amply anticipate to see road warriors hacking away at World of Warcraft on the HP Mini 311 at airport departure gates and in coffeehouses. As a matter of fact, HP should just paint a giant WoW logo on the back of this thing and sell it as a $400 portable Warcraft machine.

Video playback was first-class, and our test 720p WMV file ran flawlessly–something no other Netbook has been able to do. Web-based video is another story, yet an updated version of Flash will let streaming Web video make use of the GPU. Toshiba’s introductory Netbook does not break any new ground, merely provides improved battery life and a faster central processing unit than many in the same price range.

While we have never been especially enamored of the Toshiba NB205’s clumsy battery and awful audio, this $399 retail package is still a better deal than alike retail Netbooks we have reviewed at the same price from Asus and HP.

With a familiar set of parts, including an Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter, and a 160GB 5,400rpm HDD, the NB205 hits all the Netbook marks, yet you are able to find similar parts for as much as $100 less if you shop around.

Having said that, the textured design is a standout, and the large touch pad and mouse buttons are among the best we have used on a Netbook.

When we 1st critiqued the launch edition of the NB205, we were impressed with its fingerprint-resistant textured lid and multiple color options, which were a nice break from the shiny black systems we have seen from Asus, HP, and others. Although not the slightest Netbook we have seen, the chassis has a boxlike, flat design with rounded corners, which makes for a nicely advanced look.

The NB205 goes for a advanced keyboard, with wide separated tile keys. That makes each key a bit smaller, but the distance from letter to letter is actually close to what you’d find in a mainstream laptop keyboard. Some users claim to love this layout, and we eventually got used to it, but we favor the low-profile wide, flat keys found on most other current Netbooks. In the NB205’s case, some important keys get cut down a little too much, including the Tab key, and the tilde key is awkwardly shoved into the left of the spacebar, throwing off our touch typing.

Much better is the new and innovative touch pad. It is a bit more than 3 inches wide, which is the biggest we’ve seen on a 10-inch Netbook. The oversized mouse buttons are also very useful, making for much easier screen navigation–there’s nothing more frustrating than trying to navigate a tiny screen with a tiny touch pad. More Netbook-makers should adopt this as their new standard.

One unsatisfying feature was the system’s audio, or lack thereof. The single speaker, located on the underside of the system, was nearly useless; even with the volume cranked all the way up, we could barely make out the audio from podcasts, music, or Web video without resorting to headphones.

The 10.1-inch wide-screen display offers a 1,024×600 native resolution, which is standard for Netbooks, although higher-resolution options are readily available in Netbooks that start at the same $399 you’ll pay for the NB205.

Toshiba equips nearly all its laptops with sleep-and-charge technology, including one of the three USB ports on the NB205. That lets you to power or charge USB devices from that port, even if the laptop is sleeping, hibernating, or off. Bluetooth is not included, nor is the newer 802.11n flavor of Wi-Fi–we’d anticipate to see at least one of those in a $399 Netbook.

Netbooks tend to live within a rather narrow performance margin, and the somewhat faster N280 version of Intel’s Atom processor found in the NB205 did not have much of an impact compared with the N270 Netbooks in our Holiday 2009 Retail Laptop Roundup. That said, almost any Intel Atom N-series system provides enough computing power for the basic tasks for which they are designed–namely Web surfing, processing office documents, and some basic multimedia playback–as long as expectations are kept modest.

But keep in mind that the next generation of Atom chips is around the corner, and even some current or very imminent models include the dual-core Atom and Nvidia’s Ion graphics chip, therefore the standards of acceptable Netbook performance may be about to change.

After your research and careful product selection it would be such a shame to order an item only for it not to turn up in time for Christmas. Check the company’s delivery terms and conditions. How quickly for example, do they despatch goods? If you want something for Christmas the golden rule when shopping via the internet is to shop early and buy early. Christmas means that postal services are stretched and last day postal service announcements are there to act as a ready reckoner to help avoid disappointment. Do not forget, just because a website has a dot.com address it does not mean that it is based in the United States. Not knowing the country from which the item is being despatched can lead to serious misconceptions about posting and delivery times.
